Vaughan's Tree Protection By-law 177-2025 requires a permit to injure, destroy or remove a private tree 20 cm in diameter or greater (measured at the base). The City uses different permit types depending on the situation — a Dead, Hazardous or Emerald Ash Borer permit for compromised trees (no arborist report needed), a Residential Removal Permit for up to five trees removed for personal reasons, and a Construction or Infill Permit for larger jobs or construction-related removals.
