Regular trimming does more than tidy up a tree's shape — it removes deadwood before it becomes a hazard, opens the canopy so wind passes through instead of pushing against it, and keeps branches clear of your roofline, fence and power lines.
We trim based on the tree's actual structure and species, not a flat percentage cut. That means selective removal of crossing, rubbing, or weak branches, crown thinning where the canopy has gotten too dense, and clearance cuts around structures — all done from proper climbing or bucket access so the tree isn't damaged in the process.
Most mature trees benefit from trimming every 2–3 years; younger trees being trained for structure may need light shaping annually. Fast-growing or storm-prone species and trees near your house are worth checking more often.
In practice they overlap a lot. "Trimming" is often used for general shaping and clearance work, while "pruning" leans toward more targeted, health-focused cuts. We do both together on most jobs — see our dedicated tree pruning page for more on the health-focused side.
